Meet the first batch of ministers in the Hemant Soren government

All 3 are battle-hardened veterans

Congress leader and former Assembly speaker Alamgir Alam, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Rameshwar Oraon and RJD MLA Satyanand Bhokta were the three ministers who were sworn in at the ceremony at Morabadi ground on Sunday after governor Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to chief minister Hemant Soren.

Satyanand Bhokta, 48, who won from Chatra Assembly constituency, had first won the seat in 2000 as a BJP candidate. In his first tenure, he also served as agriculture minister. He retained the seat in 2005, but lost the next two elections.

After quitting the BJP, he joined the JVM. He made a comeback in this election when he won the Chatra seat on an RJD ticket. In 2013 he was arrested by the state vigilance department for his alleged involvement in the seeds scam.

Alamgir Alam, 69, is a four-time MLA from Pakur. He has served as Speaker of the Jharkhand Assembly in the past, but this is the first time he has been made a minister.

Rameshwar Oraon, 72, won from Lohardaga. A 1972 batch Indian Police Service officer, he resigned from the job in 2004 and successfully contested from the Lohardaga parliamentary seat as the Congress candidate.

He was appointed Union minister of tribal affairs in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA 1 government.

Oraon has also been chairperson of National Commission for Scheduled Tribes and a member of the National Human Rights Commission.
