Police arrested one Ravi Kumar and two of his friends on Wednesday for robbing a cooperative bank operating out of a building owned by his father.
The trio broke into Jharkhand State Cooperative Bank, Mirjaganj Branch, at Jamua Block on the night of May 19. But police, acting on a complaint by bank manager Arun Kumar Singh, formed an SIT that cracked the case in about a week.
According to Giridih SP Surender Kumar Jha, the trio broke the main door of the bank at night and stole Rs 2 lakh from a cupboard. They have been identified as Ravi Kumar, who is the landlord’s son and mastermind, and his friends Ashok Mistri and Laljit Sao.
But so far, police have been able to recover only Rs 1.37 lakh of the booty.
“Ravi is the son of Puran Mahto who rented his place to the bank. The SIT has recovered Rs 60,000 from him, Rs 24,000 from Mistri and 52,000 from Sao. They seem to have spent the rest of the money,” SP Jha said.
He said Kumar and the rest of gang confessed everything during interrogation. Kumar was the mastermind and knew the operations of the bank that was operating out of his ancestral house.
“He had full knowledge when the money would come to the bank and where it was kept. He also knew the entrance and exit to the building,” the SP said.
Kumar told the SP he needed the money to repay debts.
Jha said he would be rewarding all members of the SIT for solving the case in such a short time.
