When Mohammed Mudassar Kaifi fell to a bullet in Ranchi during a protest against the now-axed BJP spokespersons’ derogatory remarks on the Prophet, the hospital recorded his age as 22. But his mother said he was 16.

Less than a fortnight later, another figure — this time undisputed — has cropped up to haunt the family and challenge a stereotype that is sought to be reinforced when Muslims protest in the country.

Mudassar, also known as Mudassar Alam, has passed the Class X board exams in the first division, according to the matriculation results announced by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) on Tuesday.

Mudassar, a student of Little Angels’ High School in Pundag, Ranchi, scored 66.6 per cent or 333 out of 500 in the “best of five” subjects in Class X, the results showed.

The break-up of his marks reads: 71 in English, 64 in Hindi, 70 in Urdu, 60 in science, 68 in social studies and 53 in mathematics. Overall, 95.6 per cent students cleared the board examinations.

Mudassar’s uncle Shahid Ayubi said the boy was good at his studies and the family had pinned high hopes on him.

Mudassar was among two people who were killed allegedly in police firing during a protest after the Friday prayers in Ranchi on June 10. Stone-throwing at the police had been reported along the Main Road during the protest, held to demand the arrest of Nupur Sharma and Navin Jindal for the derogatory comments.

Mudassar’s age was mentioned as 22 at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), where he was admitted with a bullet injury. However, his mother Nikhat Perween has said he was 16.
