A Jharkhand-born entrepreneur’s online knowledge sharing venture has attracted a large number of overseas candidates in a span of over three years.
Ramgarh-born Smita Sinha started her start-up, Udany Edutech Pvt Ltd, in 2019 and now it has over 500 candidates from India and also from abroad.
“It is a very proud moment for us when our tutors from small towns such as Daltonganj (in Palamau of Jharkhand) and Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) teach students of big cities such as Toronto (Canada), Washington DC (USA), London (UK) and Dubai (UAE). We generated nearly Rs 10 lakh last year without any fund support,” said Smita, director of Udany Edutech Private Limited.
It was the real life experience which made Smita opt for this venture. “Me and my younger brother Divyanshu used to live in the small town Ramgarh in Jharkhand. My brother wanted to go to IIT for BTech, but couldn’t afford to take coaching in Kota or Ranchi at that time. There was no one to guide him in Ramgarh. He bought books and put in a lot of effort, but couldn’t get into IIT,” said Smita.
“My brother later realised that he couldn’t get into IIT despite working hard because he lacked the right knowledge and guidance. We found that many businessmen are doing businesses but they do not have knowledge how to do business automation, expansion and other core principles. In every profession, people need the right knowledge and the right guidance at the right time,” said Smita.
“We realised such knowledge was available to some people especially in big cities, but not to everyone. While some in small towns have knowledge, they are not getting the opportunity to share it with people of other big cities. We then decided to help people by making the right knowledge and guidance accessible as well as affordable to everyone at the right time,” said Smita.
The brother-sister duo started working on the idea in 2017 while they were in college.
“We did market research. My brother went to various schools in Dhanbad, Ramgarh and Deoghar for market research, while I supported him financially. After the idea got selected by ABVIL (Atal Bihari Vajpayee Innovation Lab) for incubation, we established the company Udany (pronounced as Yudaeny) Edutech Private Limited in February 2019. Udany is a Polish word which means success. Now we have a website, successpapa.com. We also have a Facebook page, fb.me/udanyedutech, with more than 2,500 followers,” informed Smita.
“Our tutors in various parts of the country take up online sessions for candidates in various sectors at an affordable rate. Initially we heard about lots of support under Jharkhand startup policy, but we could not get those monetary and non-monetary benefits. We couldn’t hire employees, so we were getting the work done by our friends or our interns,” added Smita.
They have a dream too.
“We aspire to create a world-class education environment initially in Jharkhand and then in entire India and make lakhs of people capable enough to create job opportunities for themselves and others. We would like to meet Jharkhand chief minister and education minister of the state regarding this,” said Smita.
