Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren led a massive roadshow to seek support for the state's excise minister and INDIA alliance candidate Baby Devi on Sunday for Tuesday's bypoll for the Dumri Assembly seat.

Sunday was the last of the campaign for the bypoll.

The byelection was necessitated following the death on April 6 of the state's education minister Jagarnath Mahto, a popular JMM leader of the region who had won the seat four times in a row.

Hemant inducted Mahto's widow Baby Devi into his cabinet in July and then also fielded her as the official candidate of the INDIA alliance parties in the bypoll.

The NDA, on the other hand, fielded Yashoda Devi of the Ajsu party who had finished second in the 2019 Assembly election.

As the campaign picked up, both the camps threw their weight for garnering support for their respective candidates.

On Saturday, three former BJP chief ministers — Babulal Maranadi, Arjun Munda and Raghubar Das — were among those who campaigned for Yashoda Devi. Besides, Ajsu supremo Sudesh Mahto also organised a road show in the constituency.

On behalf of Baby Devi, on the other hand, finance minister Rameshwar Oraon held meetings at various places on Saturday while the supporters of CPI-ML organised a roadshow across the constituency. But Hemant's roadshow of Sunday was very impressive.

While their candidate Baby Devi was sitting on the front seat of a top-open vehicle, Hemant, accompanied by parliamentary affairs minister Alamgir Alam, was seen standing on the same vehicle as hundreds of party workers and supporters accompanied them on other vehicles.
