A Jharkhand-based theatre unit has made employees of Tata Steel subsidiary Tata Metaliks Limited in Kharagpur aware of environment, hygiene and safety.

The Great Indian Theatre Association (GITA), which has been organising street plays and dance drama programmes in schools and other institutions across Jamshedpur, claimed that they were invited by Tata Metaliks last month.

“We were approached by Tata Metaliks to organise awareness programmes for their employees and an eight-member team reached Kharagpur on June 2 and performed street plays in Bengali for the employees,” said Prem Dikshit, a senior member of the theatre outfit located in the Mango area of Jamshedpur.

Tata Metaliks is a leading producer of pig iron and ductile iron pipe and has a manufacturing plant in Kharagpur.

“We performed the play named ‘Ami sob jani (I know everything)’ in four departments of the company on the topics of environmental protection, discarding use of plastics, road and company safety,” Prem added.

In the first scene a tree was shown which begged the common man to be aware of the environmental protection and informed about the importance of trees in our life and how destruction of trees can affect the existence of humans in the world.

The second scene depicts how carelessness leads to loss of life in road accidents and also inside companies and the problems faced by families after their demises.

The third scene depicts how a happy family disintegrates because of the use of plastic and drug addiction.

After the street plays, the theatre group members make the employees take a pledge to be aware and vigilant on environmental protection, against use of plastics, drug abuse and safety at workplace and on road.

The 32-minute street play in Bengali was written by Sanjay Dutta and directed by Geeta Kumari.

“The company management had scheduled the time because of the summer season in two sessions. The first session was held between 8am and 10am while the second session was in the evening from 3,” Prem said.
