A group of IIT (ISM) students, having long experience and expertise in waste management have developed a new platform by integrating all stakeholders, including waste generators, segregators, rag pickers, recyclers through a mobile app plugging the crucial gap of tracking and trust in the existing waste management system.

The group titled Citygen Technology Private Limited, led by Saurav Kumar, a IIT (ISM) 2018 M Tech (Environmental Engineering ) batch pass out, which earlier worked in waste management sector with various Urban local bodies including, Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, Chas Municipal Corporation and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) is all set to launch waste management work in Jamshedpur.

Talking to the The Telegraph Online on Sunday, Kapil Suhane, chief product officer of Citygen Technology Pvt Ltd who is also a 2019 batch B Tech (Petroleum Engineering) pass out of IIT (ISM), “the biggest flaw in the existing waste management system across the country is of lack of trust, as the end user always complain about the lack of regular collection or garbage and thus desist away from the paying the user charges.”

“The urban local bodies offering the waste management service on their own or through some agency claim regular service, thus causing the trust gap affecting the smooth operation of system with claims and counterclaims and thus our platform integrates all the stakeholders, including the end users and service providers on one platform ensuring the instant resolution of trust deficit," he added.

“The second biggest drawback of the existing system is lack of segregation of waste at the source site, i.e. either at the households or business installation of manufacturing units making the segregation issue complicated at the dumping site and also creating the issue of increase in landfill sites,” said Suhane and added that integrating the rag pickers with the garbage collection work as part of platform will solve the issue of segregation of the waste at the source point to a great extent.

He further said the lack of segregation at the source also creates difficulties in collection of crucial data about the different types of wastes, including, wet wastes like food leftovers or kitchen wastes and other dry wastes, like plastics or e wastes generated and thus the new platform will also fulfill the gap about segregated data collection, helping the policy makers to make effective plan for management of wastes.

Elaborating more over the issue, Saurav Kumar who is also the chief executive officer of Citygen Private Limited further said that their platform or system will also help to solve the third and biggest problem associated with the existing system with the regards to recycling of wastes by integrating professional recyclers having requisite expertise and good track record in recycling work.
