More than 12,000 candidates from 70-plus schools in the state capital, steel city and coal town Dhanbad took their ICSE exam on Friday.

No complaint of unfair practices being adopted was reported from any of the home centres and students, who answered their English language paper on Day One, left the exam hall smiling.

“The questions were easy and most of us completed the paper well before time. Let’s hope the other exams end on a happy note too,” said Aditya Kumar, a Class X student of Hill Top School in Telco, Jamshedpur.

School officials too praised the trend of questions being set on current issues affecting the society.

“For instance, there was a composition seeking student views on whether CCTV cameras should be installed in all classrooms. Another sought to know why summers are becoming hotter with each passing year and how it is affecting animals,” said Puneeta B. Chouhan, principal, Hill Top School.

Father Ajit Xess, principal of St Xavier’s School in Doranda, Ranchi, said the ICSE exams began on a confident note with the English language paper being simpler than expected. “Students were calm and composed. There were no unseemly incidents. The day’s exam was peaceful across all the 32 affiliated cradles in Ranchi,” he added.

Principal of De Nobili School, CMRI, in Dhanbad, Joseph K.A. agreed that Day One was stress-free. “Most students came out of the exam hall happy. Hope the other papers go well,” he said.

Among the conveners of ICSE in Jamshedpur and principal of DBMS English High School, Kadma, Rajani Shekhar said the schedule was planned in a manner to ensure students started the exams with a positive frame of mind.

“The candidates were given 15 minutes to read the questions from 10.45am. They wrote the paper from 11am to 1pm when the final bell rang. The exams will end on March 25 with biology. The ISC (Class XII) exams are being held in the afternoon (2pm to 5pm). A few centres hosted ISC physical education paper today (Friday),” Shekhar added.

The ISC written exams, which began on February 15, will also end on March 25 and is held between 2 pm and 5 pm.
