Chief minister Hemant Soren has on Twitter sought speedy repatriation of the body of a Sindri resident who died in Abu Dhabi on December 28, and also come down on authorities of a government hospital in Koderma for refusing to treat an elderly man from Bihar with a fractured leg till his relatives were traced.

On Wednesday morning, Hemant posted a tweet, tagging the official handles of the ministry of external affairs, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi, to repatriate the body of Jaiprakash Mahto, a fitter working at a factory in Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia, who had died during a mishap at the factory.

Jaiprakash, 33, who left Sindri to work in Al-Qassim in June 2019, is survived by his young wife, Khushboo, and eight-month-old son, Kuku.

Hemant, quoting the report of a vernacular daily, said the state administration through the Dhanbad deputy commssioner (DC) had already sent all necessary documents to expedite the procedure.

“Our thoughts are with the deceased’s family,” Hemant tweeted.

Dhanbad DC Amit Kumar told The Telegraph on Wednesday that the district administration had sent all relevant documents to authorities including the Union ministry of external affairs, and the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi.

“We expect the body of deceased would be soon handed over to the family’s relatives who are in Saudi Arabia,” the DC said.

Jaiprakash’s cousin Dilip Mahto, who also works in Saudi Arabia, first informed the family about the death, Jaiprakash’s younger brother Om Prakash said.

“We know there are a lot of formalities needed before the body can be transferred, but as all the paperwork is done from our (Dhanbad administration) end , we are now waiting anxiously to receive the body,” Om Prakash said.

In the Koderma case, Shatrughan Sao, 60, languished at Koderma Sadar Hospital for two days without getting any treatment for his femur fracture as authorities waited for his relatives to appear.

Finally, Koderma police found a nephew of Sao, who got in touch with workers of the JMM, Hemant’s party, and narrated his uncle’s ordeal.

The JMM functionaries informed Hemant, who was furious. Directing the patient to be immediately shifted to RIMS, Ranchi, Hemant said in a tweet: “Instead of taking the responsibility to solve the problem, every officer wants to shift it. This is really sad, but the situation will change now. This attitude will no longer be tolerated.”

The chief minister also directed the management of all (government) hospitals to treat patients with sensitivity.

He said that while the police had the responsibility to locate relatives of unidentified patients, doctors should focus on the treatment.

The elderly man, who is from Bihar’s Nalanda, was shifted from Koderma to RIMS on Tuesday. His surgery is likely on Saturday, Ranchi DC Rai Mahimapat Ray wrote to the chief minister on Wednesday.
