Train passengers will soon be able to check health parameters while on the go.

The Chakradharpur railway division has decided to come up with health kiosks in four railway stations under it — Tatanagar and Chakradharpur (in Jharkhand) and Rourkela and Jharsuguda (in Odisha).

The Chakradharpur railway division has roped in private firm Ambient Solutions, for installing the health kiosks at the four railway stations.

“The health kiosks at Tatanagar and Chakradharpur stations will become functional by March. Efforts will be made to make operational the facility in Rourkela and Jharsuguda stations by April,” said Manish Pathak, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division and an official railway spokesperson.

Pathak and his team inspected Tatanagar station last week to identify the site at platform 1 where the health kiosk will be set up. All necessary formalities will be completed in the next couple of weeks, he said.

Each health kiosk will be able to check basic body parameters such as height, weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, as well as blood pressure, blood sugar, oxygen saturation level and bone mineral composition, all at a nominal fee.

“The move will facilitate travelling passengers to get their health check-up at the station itself. We (the railways) will also earn a non-fare revenue through this initiative,” Pathak explained.

The Chhotanagpur Passengers’ Association welcomed the move.

“The health kiosk will provide an opportunity for passengers to get themselves medically checked up at a nominal charge. Doctors at the health kiosk should provide a health report card with necessary recommendations. This is a good initiative for busy passengers,” said Arun Tiwari, general secretary of the association.
