If you feel strongly about the planet, you can now recycle organic waste into compost at home, with a little help from Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd (formerly Jusco).
Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd will distribute green bins to 1,500 households at upscale Northern Town as a pilot project to compost organic waste right at the point of waste generation — the home.
The distribution of bins is expected to start this week. Each bin — named My Green Bin — can compost 10 kilos of organic waste in 40 days.
Each home will get two bins. People can make organic manure and use it in their gardens.
Thanks to a microbe that helps decompose waste faster than the natural process, the bin can compost vegetables peels, cooked food, fruit seeds, egg shells, flowers, tea bags, coffee, leaf plates, twigs, garden waste and dry leaves.
The microbe has to be spread evenly across each layer of waste (3 inches) to get better results. After 10 days, the user can get liquid manure (from a tap in the bin) that can be directly used as a fertiliser.
“If waste is reduced at the point of generation, the home, load on city landfills and other waste collection centres will be less. It will also develop a mindset among people on reducing waste through simple methods,” said Arun Vidyut, chief divisional manager (public health), Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd.
According to officials of Tata Steel Utilities & Infrastructure Services Ltd, each household generates one kilo of waste everyday out which 600gm are organic waste. Half of this organic waste can be recycled at home. This means that the compost kit will help convert 300gm into manure without loading landfills.
“We have been promoting waste segregation or separating organic and inorganic waste right at homes for proper waste management,” said Vidyut. “The 2 Bins 1 Bag project kicked off in 2017 making Jamshedpur the first city in Jharkhand to introduce segregation of solid waste at source. Now the green bin is another innovation.”
