Two thieves, posing as polishers of gold ornaments, fled with jewellery worth more than a lakh from two houses in Jugsalai police station area on Friday.

Police have registered a case of theft on the basis of an FIR lodged by one of the victims and started investigation.

The victim, identified as Suman Kaur Minhar, 35, is a resident of densely populated Surti Chowk on Purani Bustee Road in Jugsalai.

According to the FIR, the thieves decamped with a gold chain, a pair of earrings and a ring worth over Rs 1.5 lakh from her house.

Suman said she was busy in her kitchen around 11am when two men came to her house and claimed to be experts in polishing gold ornaments.

“The duo looked decent and mild-mannered. I brought out some of my jewellery and gave them to the men who immediately started work,” the woman said.

Suman said one of the men, who looked around 40 years old, asked her to bring some turmeric powder and a mugful of water.

“They made a solution of water and turmeric powder and dipped the ornaments in it, asking me to keep a watch. After five minutes, one of them took out the ornaments from the solution and wrapped them in a paper before handing them to me. Asking me to open the paper a little later, they took the polishing fee from me and went away,” Suman said.

When she unwrapped the paper sometime later, she found no ornaments inside.

“I rushed out of the house and started looking for the duo, but they were nowhere to be found. I decided to go to Jugsalai police station along with a family member to lodge a complaint,” the woman said, adding that she later learnt that her neighbour had also been duped in a similar way.

Officer in-charge of Jugsalai police station, Nitya Nand Mahto, confirmed the theft.

“We have obtained the CCTV camera footage of one of the thieves and have circulated it across the city to prevent them from commiting more such crimes. We have also alerted cops in other police stations and directed them to step up vigil,” Mahto said.
