Swaran Singh is a former cyclist who represented India in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok. Now, he works as a security guard at Vijaya Homes in Baridih.
Three siblings from the US have come forward to help Singh by collecting Rs 1 lakh for him.
Amarjeet Singh, Piara Singh and Charanjeet Singh live in Stockton, California.
Swaran received the cheque on Friday.
Monetary support for Singh was facilitated by Amar Singh, a former international cyclist and an Arjuna awardee.
Amar lives with his sons in Canada but has been stuck in Jamshedpur due to Covid-19. He came to the city in March because of his younger brother’s demise. Gurdial Singh was also a cyclist who represented the country.
Singh and former Jharkhand Cycling Association secretary Satbir Singh Sahota also got financial assistance from former cyclists and sportspersons.
“I thank Amar Singh and the three brothers who came forward with financial assistance,” the 70-year-old added.
Singh, who lives in a slum in Baridih, said he would use the money for his daughter’s treatment. She is suffering from bone tuberculosis.
“My daughter’s treatment will begin next month. The money would come handy,” the former cyclist said.
Earlier, fourteen sportspersons from Jamshedpur, mostly cyclists have also provided Rs 37,000 to Singh while Vijay Homes contributed Rs 14,500. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) assistant general manager K.V.P. Rao contributed Rs 10,000.
