Police said two persons have complained that money was siphoned off their bank accounts after they cancelled orders they had placed on a food delivery app.
The complaints were reported on Friday from Lower Bazar and Chutia police stations. In both, Zomato app users had cancelled orders and had given their bank details to receive the payback.
Chutia police station officer in-charge Ravi Thakur said complainant Sunil Tanti had said that Rs 15,000 was taken from his bank account.
“He had ordered and paid for food worth Rs 112. As the order took a long time, he cancelled it and filled in bank details (at a link he was apparently provided) to get Rs 112 reimbursed. However, he soon found Rs 15,000 was deducted from his account. We’ve started a probe,” Thakur said.
Lower Bazar OC Satish Kumar also said that a resident of Purulia Road, Sanjay Gupta, had complained that Rs 10,000 was withdrawn from his bank account.
Contacted, Zomato assistant manager Mohammed Imran expressed ignorance.
“I do not have any idea about the incident, this is the first time something like this has come to my knowledge. Hackers must be involved,” he said, expressing concern for the customers.
