The steel city will have the first fire-safety audit of its commercial areas this month.

With back-to-back fire mishaps, around three in the last two months reported from Sakchi, Azadnagar (in Mango) and Baridih market areas, the district administration on Tuesday constituted a special committee to conduct a fire-safety audit of the market areas in the city periphery.

“The team will have to delve on all aspects to prevent fire mishaps in crowded commercial hubs of the city and also remove, if necessary, encroachments for hassle-free accessibility of fire tenders during mishaps,” said East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Ravi Shankar Shukla.

He added: “The teams will also see if availability of fire hydrants are functional and in sufficient numbers and whether there was sufficient number of emergency exits, apart from checking whether fire-safety equipment installed in multi-storeyed buildings are functional or not. The team has to submit its report in 10 days.”

The team comprises fire safety officer of Jamshedpur (at Golmuri), Rabindra Thakur or a representative deputed by the fire safety officer, representatives of civic body (Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Notified Area Committee and Jugsalai municipality for Jugsalai) and circle officer of Jamshedpur and Mango.

“The team will coordinate with Tata Steel chief security Gopal Prasad Choudhary and seek his assistance during the audit,” added Shukla.

The team will conduct physical verification of the commercial areas and additional district magistrate (law and order) Nand Kishore Lal will conduct an overall supervision of the committee’s findings.
