Everesters to meet in Ranchi for summit on August 20

We have organised the event for celebrating the completion of 70 years of the first conquest of the world’s highest peak by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in May 1953, says Rajeev Gupta, director of Ideate Inspire Ignite Foundation

A total of 15 mountaineers, who have all climbed Mount Everest, will gather in Ranchi for a summit on August 20.

“We have organised the event for celebrating the completion of 70 years of the first conquest of the world’s highest peak by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in May 1953,” informed Rajeev Gupta, director of Ideate Inspire Ignite Foundation that will host the summit in association with the Central Coalfields Limited.

They had heard about such a celebration in Nepal but not in India so far and that prompted them to plan the summit in Ranchi, Gupta said.

“Tenzing Norgay’s son Jamling who himself climbed Mount Everest in 1996 will be present here that day to share his experiences,” he confirmed.

Jamling, along with Edmund Hillary’s son Peter, participated in an Everest expedition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent. He also wrote a book titled Touching My Father’s Soul: A Sherpa’s Journey To The Top of Everest, the first documented account of a Sherpa’s point of view.

“Wish we could also have Peter here but we are expecting he will send a video message for the occasion,” Gupta said.

He further said: “The object of the summit is to show the youth how even seemingly impossible goals can be achieved when pursued with courage.”

Of the 15 Everesters who will be present on the occasion, 8 are women and they include Arunima Sinha, the only amputee Indian climber who conquered Mount Everest and Binita Soren, the only tribal to achieve the feat so far, besides the sisters duo Anuja and Aditi Vaidya, he added.

“Besides Binita, two more achievers from Jharkhand, Premlata Agrawal and Hemant Gupta, will also participate in the summit,” Gupta informed.

Colonel Ranveer Jamwal, an army officer who climbed Mount Everest thrice, will also attend the meet, Gupta said.
