Covid shadow on yoga day celebrations

People stay away from spots that usually see large gatherings

Gopal Maidan in the steel city lay deserted on Sunday morning. Usually, hundreds of enthusiasts get together here to celebrate the International Day of Yoga organised by the East Singhbhum district administration — but this year was different.

People this year preferred staying home to practice yoga while some organisations celebrated the day with a limited number of people keeping in mind social distancing rules.

Union minister of tribal affairs Arjun Munda, former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das and various corporate executives and trade union leaders performed yoga for an hour at their homes. Social gatherings and enjoying the day together weren't options.

The sports department of Tata Steel organised an online yoga session with a YouTube video. A pre-recorded video was uploaded with yoga trainer Arvind Prasad guiding participants on various asanas and their importance and effects on the body. The one-hour-long video link was sent to all officials on Saturday.

At Kalamandir- the Celluloid Chapter Art Foundation in Bistupur, an hour-long yoga session was organised by the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) Calcutta where around 22 participants participated while maintaining physical distancing norms. Subhashish Bhadury, a yoga instructor and founder of Bal Vikas Yoga Mitra Mandal, guided the participants through various asanas that included standing as well as seated postures. The theme of the yoga day here was Yoga for Emotional Well-being.

The Jamshedpur Women’s College too celebrated the day. While few students practiced yoga in college, others joined online as the session was live-streamed on social media platforms. Karim City College also started a three-day online yoga camp on Google Meet from Sunday.
