Neha Rajak, a mentally challenged powerlifter, has received help from an unexpected quarter.
The 19-year-old had won four bronze medals at the Special Olympics International World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi last year.
However, she is yet to receive her cash prize of Rs 4 lakh from the Union sports and youth affairs ministry.
The Telegraph had in its April 26 edition reported how Neha and her parents were surviving the lockdown by eating starchy rice and how her prize money could have helped them in this crisis.
UK resident Satpal Singh, who owns a fuel pump in Birmingham, has now offered to provide Rs 10,000 to Neha, who lives in Sonari.
Singh called up Special Olympics Jharkhand assistant area director Satbir Singh Sahota on Sunday and said he would send the money to Sahota’s bank account by Monday.
Confirming the development, Sahota said the UK businessman had gone through The Telegraph report titled “Cash lockdown blow for special champ,” and promised help.
“Singh will be sending Rs 10,000 to my bank account by Sunday. I will route the same to Neha’s account. We welcome Singh’s gesture. Neha hails from a poor family and needs help,” Sahota, who has himself given Rs 5,000 and groceries to the family, said.
Neha’s father Vinod, a washerman who works at a laundry in Bistupur, said he was indebted to people who had come forward with help.
“I am happy with Singh’s gesture. May god bless him,” he said.
