Some builders in the city have resumed construction work, stopped since the lockdown was imposed.

Construction work began on Friday at two multi-storey buildings, one in Bistupur and another at Baradwari in Sakchi.

The site in-charge at the construction site on L Road in Bistupur said only five labourers had turned up for work whereas more than 30 workers used to work till March 24.

“Most workers have not turned up as they had come to work from Patamda and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha. We expect them as soon as the Lockdown-IV gets over on May 31,” said the site in-charge.

He said they have arranged food and lodging for the five workers who have managed to come from Chaibasa in West Singhbhum, around 65km from the steel city.

He said all the workers, including those who are likely to come after the lockdown lifts, would return back to their homes only after completion of the construction work.

At Baradwari as well, very few labourers started work from Friday on a five-storey building.

Construction work has not only started in the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) limits, but in the rural areas also. Labourers, including women, were seen at work in Patamda and Bodam blocks of East Singhbhum district and Gamharia block in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

JNAC city manager Ravi Bharti said building construction has been allowed during the lockdown-IV, but only between 7am and 7pm. “The builders have to make arrangements for the workers to remain at the construction site itself throughout the night,” Bharti said.

He said officials may carry out surprise inspections.
