Voluntary organisations are helping the blood bank at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) replenish its stock at a time not many donors are turning up on their own because of the extended ongoing lockdown.
Two blood donation camps were organised outside Ranchi on Sunday that together collected 214 units for the RIMS blood bank.
“RIMS receives patients from across the state and there is always a demand for blood. Voluntary organisations help a lot to overcome the crisis by holding such camps,” said Dr Sushma Kumari, who is in charge of the blood bank at the state-run hospital. Golap Mohammad Choudhury, secretary of the Ranchi branch of Voluntary Blood Donors Association of Jharkhand, said their assistant secretary Bijay Ganguly was instrumental behind the Chakradharpur camp in West Singhbhum district that collected 128 units on Sunday.
Ganguly said he had gone to Chakradharpur and was stranded there because of the lockdown.
“So tried to do something fruitful by contacting Giriraj Sena, a local organisation,” Ganguly said from Chakradharpur .
“A special task force of Jharkhand Jaguar also held a camp at Tendergram in Ranchi district that collected 86 units of blood the same day, raising the day’s tally to 214 units,” Dr Kumari said.
