“When Sharma and his family reached their house located near Naman Vidya, a private school, he found the lock of the door broken. After entering, he found the steel almirah open and household items scattered on the floor. On searching, he found cash and ornaments missing from the almirah and immediately informed police,” a local social worker Rakesh Kumar Singh said.

Around 50,000 people stay in Vidya Nagar, which is located between Harmu Housing Colony and Madhukam.

“As soon as I came to know about the incident, I rushed to Sharma’s house. A family residing in front of the victim’s house claimed that everything was normal and they saw the house locked till yesterday evening. Therefore, it was clear that the break-in took place at late at night,” Singh said.

Sukhdeonagar officer-in-charge Sanay Kumar confirmed the theft and said an FIR was registered based on the statement of Sharma, who is a field worker.

“Burglars took advantage of the absence of house members and decamped with cash and ornaments. It is difficult to ascertain when the break-in took place as Sharma’s neighbours were also not present in their houses,” Kumar said.

“After we inspected the spot, we found that two houses adjacent to Sharma’s were also unattended. But the burglars left them alone. We suspect that someone might have committed the theft due to some personal rivalry,” Kumar added.
