Hailed as “Fighter Dadi”, a 77-year-old cancer patient successfully recovered from coronavirus and was discharged on Sunday evening from Patliputra Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad.

Paramjeet Kaur, resident of Jamadoba in Dhanbad, was under treatment for cancer at a leading hospital in Mumbai since October last year. She got stuck in the city due to the nationwide lockdown and subsequent restrictions on inter-state travel. However, on May 8, she returned to Dhanbad in an ambulance along with his 37-year-old son who had accompanied him to Mumbai.

Soon after their arrival, the duo directly went to PMCH, Dhanbad, where doctors collected their samples and found them Covid-19 positive on May 10. The mother-son duo was immediately shifted to BCCL Covid hospital in Dhanbad after their tests result arrived and a dedicated team of doctors led by Dr U.K. Ojha supervised her treatment, which led to her recovery.

“As Kaur was diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing radiotherapy in Mumbai, her immunity level was very low. After developing the viral infection, she suffered from fever on a daily basis. We started round the clock supervision for her and made a special diet chart, which had a high protein supplement to increase her immunity and started giving her high dosage of antibiotics,” said Dr Ojha.

However, when two of her test reports came positive in a week and with fewer chances of recovery, Dr Ojha consulted Kaur’s oncologist and decided to withdraw her cancer medication. Soon after, she started showing signs of recovery.

“I stopped her cancer medication after consultation with her oncologist for a week and tested her samples again on May 22 and 29. The patient tested positive on May 22 but the fourth sample came negative on May 30 after which we performed chest X-ray and discharged her on May 30.” Dr Ojha said.

Kaur was conferred the title of “Fighter Dadi” by the hospital staff after she fought and won over the viral infection with her determination.

“I had lost all hope after I realised that I was infected with the coronavirus but the support, encouragement and care provided by doctors led to my recovery or else I had thought that I wouldn’t survive,” said Kaur.
