Police said the attack, near Nitibag Colony in Patelnagar, was triggered by a dispute over comments of supremacy posted on Facebook and the attackers, led by Sudhir Dubey, were armed with carbine and sophisticated pistols.

Cops have seized an SUV belonging to the attackers and recovered four empty cartridges from the spot.

Sitaramdera officer-in-charge Anjani Kumar confirmed that the injured were all members of Akhilesh’s gang.

“Though Akhilesh is lodged in Dumka central jail, many of his gang members are in the city. Sudhir, once a close aide of Akhilesh, has set up a separate gang of his own. We are trying to identify the members of Sudhir’s gang involved in the attack,” the OC said.

According to sources, one of Sudhir’s supporters recently commented on Facebook that there was none to match his (Sudhir’s) guts, drawing sharp reactions from Akhilesh’s men.

On Wednesday, Sudhir’s brother Rakesh rang up Kanhyaiya, a member of Akhilesh’s gang, to settle the dispute. The chat escalated into an argument during which Kanhiya told Rakesh that he would meet him in person. Rakesh, who was in Patelnagar, told Sudhir, who quickly mobilised his men.

Kanhaiya and his men were greeted with a spray of bullets as soon as they reached the spot and got down from their cars.
