As the crisis at the state-run Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) blood bank continued , patients’ attendants arranged blood and many donors turned up to the hospital on their own accord on Thursday.
The Telegraph in its Thursday edition reported how the district’s lone government medical college and hospital was out of blood.
Asked about the situation, Ashok Kumar Sharma, a technician at the blood bank, said: “Till afternoon (Thursday), 17 units were required. In almost all cases, replacements (family or friends of the patient donating to replace the blood taken from the bank) came to the rescue.” He added the situation was likely to improve only after June 14 when a blood donation camp for Bengali Welfare Society would be held.
However, hearteningly, many youngsters volunteered on their own to to donate blood. Nishant Kumar, a member of Dhanbad-based social outfit Sansar Pariwar, said: “I was in the hospital (PMCH) for some personal work. When I came to know about the blood crisis I donated a unit.”
Like Nishant, Bindeshwar Murmu, a BA honours student of PK Roy Memorial College, also rose to the occasion. “I came to know that a thalassaemic toddler from Deoghar needed a unit of A+ve blood. So I donated blood,” he said.
Dhanbad SSP Kishor Kashal also asked DSP (law and order) Mukesh Kumar to explore the possibility of holding a blood donation camp this weekend where police personnel could take part in view of the PMCH crisis.
