A three-member team of police and district administrative officials on Sunday began a probe into the alleged inhuman treatment meted out to a 30-year-old pregnant woman at MGM Medical College & Hospital on Thursday morning.
Victim Rizwana Khatoon had submitted a written complaint to East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Ravi Shankar Shukla on Thursday and sent copies of it to chief minister Hemant Soren and health minister Banna Gupta.
In her complaint, Rizwana, who had gone to MGM with heavy bleeding, alleged that she was made to mop the blood on the floor at the hospital’s labour room and smacked with a slipper.
DC Shukla, who ordered the probe on Sunday, has directed the team to complete it by Monday.
The three-member team comprises MGM Medical College & Hospital deputy superintendent N.P. Chaudhury, executive magistrate Manmohan Prasad and officer-in-charge (OC) of Sakchi police station Kunal Kumar.
Prasad and OC Kumar visited the hospital on Sunday.
“We have started a probe into the alleged inhuman behaviour that a pregnant woman was subjected to at the state-run hospital. We will submit a report soon,” OC Kumar told The Telegraph.
Rizwana’s husband Md Shamim, a resident of Green Valley on Road No. 17 in Mango, said he had accompanied his wife to the hospital on Thursday morning.
“My wife, who was in the fourth month of her pregnancy, had suddenly started bleeding. First I took her to Abhishek Nursing Home, but gynaecologist Rupa Shekhar, who had been treating my wife, was not present. We then went to Tata Main Hospital, but they asked us to deposit Rs 19,000 for admission. I had only Rs 12,000 with me and decided to go to medical MGM Medical College & Hospital,” Shamim, an auto-rickshaw driver, said.
Shamim said they straightaway went to the labour room where his wife was kept lying on a bed unattended for half an hour.
“When the doctor finally showed up, he asked us to wait for some more time. When my sister-in-law and others protested, the doctor said he was a medical professional and knew better. After that, a nurse turned up and asked my wife to clean the blood from the floor and slapped her thigh. While my wife was cleaning the floor, another woman employee came and hit her on her back with a slipper and said people like her were spreading the virus,” Shamim recounted.
He said they subsequently took Rizwana to a nursing-home in Mango where they were told she had suffered a miscarriage and her uterus was cleansed.
The couple have a seven-year-old daughter.
Shamim said they had come back to MGM on Thursday, but found no one who could register their complaint.
Before the probe team arrived at MGM at 2pm on Sunday, this correspondent had called up hospital deputy superintendent Chaudhury, who said he was not aware about any such incident.
“I have not got any such complaint. I cannot say anything. If anyone faced any problem, he or she could have lodged a complaint with me as I am always available at the hospital,” he said.
Chaudhury could not be contacted despite several calls to his mobile after the probe team’s visit to the hospital.
