As many as 35 persons were injured when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a trailer that had suddenly slammed the brakes near Becco turning on Tata-Kandra Road under Adityapur police station in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, around 6km from the heart of the city, on Friday morning.
The victims, who were employees of Brakes India Pvt Ltd, were on their way to the company’s plant in Adityapur when the mishap took place around 5.45am.
Sources said the front portion of the bus was badly damaged after it hit the trailer that had abruptly applied the brakes while taking a turn towards Becco crossing.
The trailer driver sped away soon after the accident, leaving the injured writhing in pain.
Deputy mayor of Adityapur Municipal Corporation, Amit Singh, who was passing through the stretch, stopped at the mishap spot and started rescuing the injured along with his men.
The injured were rushed to Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital from where two, whose condition was said to be serious, were shifted to Tata Main Hospital.
Representatives of the company later visited both the hospitals to take stock of the situation.
Police, which reached the spot after the mishap, have started an investigation.
Officer in-charge (OC) of Adityapur police station, Shusma Kumari, confirmed the development. “All the injured have received timely medical care at the hospitals. Their condition is said to be out of danger,” Shusma said.
She said the bus owner, Hardeep Singh, had turned up at Adityapur police station to lodge a complaint against the trailer driver, but he was yet to submit anything in writing so far.
“We will start a formal inquiry after getting a complaint from the bus owner. We will take the help of CCTV camera footage to track down the trailer,” she said.
