The state capital is beefing up security in the wake of President Ram Nath Kovind’s two-day visit to Jharkhand from Friday.

A senior official at the state police headquarters said 3,000 extra police personnel would be deputed in the capital for President Kovind’s visit.

“The President is likely to land at Birsa Munda Airport on Friday afternoon from where he will attend the convocation at the Central University of Jharkhand,” the official said.

The varsity programme will be over by 5.30pm, the official said. “The President will return to Raj Bhavan. Next morning, Saturday, he will go to the headquarters of NGO Vikas Bharti at Bishunpur in Gumla and then to temple town Deoghar,” the official added. “He will return to Ranchi the same day (Saturday) and leave for Delhi.”

However, the additional police force will be deputed in the capital till Sunday, March 1, added the official.

The 3,000 extra police personnel in Ranchi include four IPS rank officials, 24 DSP rank officials, 60 inspectors and 250 sub-inspectors. The rest are constables.

“Those deputed for this special duty have been asked to report today (Wednesday) and they will remain on deputation till Sunday, March 1,” the official said.

Another police official said that the President would reach the CUJ convocation venue (Cheri-Manatu) via Kanke Road. During that time, constables will be deputed along both sides of the 25km-plus-stretch starting from Birsa Munda Airport and ending in the campus of CUJ,” the official said.

The programme venue will have a three-tier security arrangement, the policeman said.

A bomb disposal squad, two companies of RAF and two dog squads will also be deputed at the venue.

Commuters will not be allowed on the road when the President’s convoy passes. Traffic SP Ajit Peter Dungdung said the detailed traffic plan would be circulated on Thursday.

Ranchi DC Rai Mahimapat Ray said proper security arrangements were being made in view of the President’s visit.
