Preeclampsia affects approximately 5-8% of pregnancies globally and is a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. It can develop suddenly after the 20th week of pregnancy and, if left untreated, can lead to serious, even fatal, complications.

Symptoms may include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, severe headaches, vision changes, and upper abdominal pain. Pregnant women are urged to attend all prenatal appointments and report any unusual symptoms promptly.

On World Preeclampsia Day, the SFM pledged to raise awareness and urged healthcare professionals and society to stay informed about the latest research and advancements in diagnosing and managing preeclampsia.

The organization also called on policymakers to support initiatives that enhance maternal healthcare services, ensuring all women have access to quality prenatal care.

By working together and spreading awareness, the SFM aims to prevent the suffering caused by preeclampsia and protect the lives of mothers and babies worldwide.
