The woman who had set herself on fire along with her daughter at the gates of chief minister Adityanath’s office on July 17 died on Wednesday at Civil Hospital, Lucknow.
Sophia Begum, 56, who was protesting against police inaction against people who had allegedly grabbed her land at Jamo in Amethi, died of 80 per cent burns and septicaemia, hospital authorities said.
Daughter Guriya Bano, 28, was said to be out of danger.
Police had arrested four land-grab accused —Arjun Sahu, Raj Karan, Ram Milan and Sunil Sahu — from Jamo a few hours after the women attempted self-immolation. The government suspended a sub-inspector and two constables of Jamo police station on July 18.
The women carried copies of a handwritten application to the police while attempting suicide at the Lok Bhavan gates. It said some affluent local people had grabbed their ancestral land and beat them whenever they tried to get it back, threatening to kill them if they didn’t leave the village.
“They beat us whenever we go to the police. The police also terrorise us and ask us to follow the instructions of the land-grabbers. While registering a case against the accused, the police had booked us in a false case of taking the law into our own hand,” their application said.
Hospital director D.N. Negi said: “Her (Begum’s) infection had worsened because of her more than 80 per cent burns. She died of septicaemia.”
