Suspected militants fired at a family celebrating Id in Kashmir’s Pulwama on Wednesday, killing a middle-aged woman and critically injuring a youth, on a day pro-azadi protesters clashed with security forces after prayers at many places in the Valley.

A police spokesperson said the militants barged into the lawn of the south Kashmir house and opened indiscriminate fire. Nigeena Bano, who lost her husband to a militant attack in 2017, and Jalal-ud-din Bafanda, both residents of Singoo Narbal village, suffered bullet injuries.

“Both the civilians suffered critical gun-shot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital. Nigeena Bano succumbed to her injuries,” the spokesperson said.

The police have registered a case and started a probe. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police sources said Nigeena’s husband, Mohammad Yousuf Lone, was also killed by suspected militants in 2017.

The sources said the family was celebrating Id in the morning when the militants attacked them. A resident said the male members had gone for Id prayers.

“We heard gunshots and rushed to the house. The two were bleeding profusely,” he said.

Pulwama police chief Chandan Kohli said Bafanda, the youth who suffered bullet injuries, was not related to Nigeena.

“Once he gets better, we will know whether he was a bystander or had gone to the house to meet the family. His condition is improving,” Kohli said.

Pro-azadi protesters clashed with security forces at multiple places in north, central and south Kashmir after Id prayers, injuring several people. Protesters waved Pakistani and Islamic State flags outside Srinagar’s Jamia Mosque.
