Wayanad or Rae Bareli? Rahul Gandhi not telling yet

Indications are that he might retain the family borough in Uttar Pradesh — given the state’s primacy in national politics — rather than Wayanad in Kerala, which he represented in the previous Lok Sabha

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday kept Wayanad and Rae Bareli guessing about which of the two he would retain, merely saying that people of neither constituency would be unhappy with his decision.

Indications are that he might retain the family borough in Uttar Pradesh — given the state’s primacy in national politics — rather than Wayanad in Kerala, which he represented in the previous Lok Sabha.

Addressing a thanksgiving rally at Edavanna in Malappuram district, which is part of the Wayanad constituency, Rahul said: “Now I have a dilemma in front of me.”

He added: “What I will commit to you is that both Wayanad and Rae Bareli will be happy with my decision.”

He did not explain but the local Congress in Wayanad is hoping that if Rahul does not retain the seat, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will replace him.

Some Congress leaders from Kerala are said to have told the high command that it’s important to have at least one of the Gandhi siblings as a Lok Sabha MP from the state.

Rahul’s decision to contest from Wayanad in 2019 had helped the Congress-led United Democratic Front win 19 of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala. The UDF won 18 this time. Rahul had also contested from Amethi — the twin constituency of Rae Bareli — the last time but lost to Smriti Irani of the BJP.

At Rahul’s second rally of the day in Kalpetta, Wayanad, state Congress president K. Sudhakaran told the crowd that Rahul could not remain in Wayanad because of his national commitments.

“Rahul Gandhi, who has to lead India, cannot remain in Wayanad. Everyone please understand that,” Sudhakaran said, much to the bemusement of Rahul, who later told the gathering he hadn’t made up his mind.

Both Wayanad and Rae Bareli gave Rahul big wins. He won from Rae Bareli by 390,030 votes while the margin in Wayanad shrank from 431,770 in 2019 to 364,422 this time.

At the Edavanna rally, Rahul was in obvious discomfort while addressing the big question since Wayanad, which he repeatedly called his “second home” these five years, had twice elected him with thumping majorities.

“The question is, will I be a member of Parliament from Wayanad or will I be a member of Parliament from Rae Bareli,” Rahul said, setting off chants of: “Wayanad, Wayanad.”

Rahul then took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim of having been sent by God to do His work.

“Unfortunately, unlike the Prime Minister, I am not guided by God. I am a human being,” he said to loud cheers.

“You saw in the election, first the Prime Minister said 400 paar. After that, 400 paar disappeared and 300 paar came. After that, 300 paar disappeared. And then he gave a speech where he said, ‘I am not biological’.”

Rahul continued: “He (Modi) said, ‘After my mother passed away I realised that I am not a biological person. I don’t take any decisions. I have been put on this earth by Paramatma and he takes all the decisions’.

“Modiji has a strange Parmatma. His Parmatma makes him take all the decisions in favour of Adani and Ambani. Parmatma tells him, ‘Narendra Modiji, this morning you are going to give Bombay airport to Adani’.

“But unfortunately I do not have this luxury because I am a human being and God does not order me. In fact, for me it is much simpler. My God is the poor people of India. My God is the people of Wayanad.”

Rahul added: “So, for me, it is very easy. I just go talk to the people and my God tells me what to do.”
