Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina on Thursday said his party was confident of getting a majority in the just-concluded Assembly elections, leaning on the famous Urdu line “Thoda intezar ka maza lijiye” on the question of installing a Hindu chief minister.
Raina, accompanied by the senior party leadership, addressed the first news conference after the elections and presented a report card on their performance amid speculation that the National Conference and the Congress might get a majority in the elections.
The BJP leader, however, claimed his party was set to form the government on its own without relying on other parties. The party has contested 62 out of 90 seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly — all 43 in Jammu and 19 out of 47 in Kashmir. Winning 46 out of 62 seats appears a tall order, many feel.
“The way people participated in the polls in large numbers, I have full faith that Jammu and Kashmir will have a BJP government. I have full faith that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party,” he told reporters.
The BJP leader said he was hopeful that the lotus would bloom in Kashmir in addition to Jammu.
Raina was repeatedly asked about the installation of a Dogra chief minister in Jammu and Kashmir, which if happens will be a first in the state and its new avatar as a Union Territory. Dogra is synonymous with Hindu. BJP leaders have on record set the installation of a Hindu chief minister as their goal.
Raina appeared to parry the question when he was pointedly asked that there was a demand on all social media pages of the BJP to install a Dogra CM.
“I believe we should wait for the results on October 8,” he said.
But another question followed where he was asked to specifically talk about a Dogra CM.
“Thoda intezar ka maza lijiye (the fun is in the wait),” he replied, with a broad smile on his face.
