Two militants were killed and two security personnel injured in a gunfight in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

The development came amid heightened security in the Valley for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Thursday for International Yoga Day celebrations.

Security forces have been deployed at multiple places in Srinagar and outside for Modi’s first visit after being sworn in as Prime Minister for the third term.

A government order on Tuesday had declared Srinagar as a “temporary red zone”, banning the use of drones and quadcopters.

Officials said a cordon and search operation in Watergam, Baramulla, on Wednesday turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the security forces.

Two militants were killed and two security personnel — an army jawan and a cop — were injured, officials said.

“On specific intelligence input regarding presence of terrorists, a Joint Operation was launched by #IndianArmy & @JmuKmrPolice today in Hadipora area of PD Sopore; two terrorists eliminated, operation in progress,” the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps or 15 Corps posted on X.

This is the second gunfight during the three-day Eid in Kashmir. On Monday, the security forces gunned down Lashkar militant Umar Lone in Bandipora.

An official spokesman said the Prime Minister would participate in the 10th International Day of Yoga event on Friday morning at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre on the banks of the Dal Lake.

Sources said hundreds of government employees had been asked to participate in the main event on Friday and for the rehearsal in the run-up to the event, with a warning that any “negligence” won’t be accepted.

Officials said thousands of people from different walks of life were taking part.
