Protests over the rape of an engineering student and the fatal arson attack on a schoolgirl in Agra on Tuesday rocked the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Thursday with the Opposition demanding the resignation of chief minister Yogi Adityanath for failure to ensure women’s safety.

Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs staged a walkout, pointing out that both crimes took place when the state’s police chief was holding a meeting on law and order in the city.

Ajay Kumar Lallu, the leader of the Congress Legislative Party, said in the Assembly that the state government had failed to protect women and that it had no right to continue in power.

“Both the incidents took place in Agra when the DGP was reviewing law and order at a meeting barely 15km from the crime sites,” Lallu said, demanding Adityanath’s resignation as the Congress members raised anti-government slogans and staged a walkout.

BSP legislators also mouthed slogans against the government and demanded stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such crimes. They boycotted the remainder of the day’s session.

Adityanath, who rose to speak when the Congress and BSP legislators had walked out, said his government was committed to ensure proper law-and-order management, particularly women’s safety.

A Class X Dalit student in Agra was set on fire by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants on Tuesday and she breathed her last at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital the early on Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon a 24-year-old cousin of the girl committed suicide by consuming insecticide after being asked by the police to report for questioning.

In another part of Agra around the same time on Tuesday, a first-year BTech student was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by four persons.
