Bihar police on Sunday arrested two persons at Patna airport for allegedly travelling in an inebriated condition on an IndiGo flight from Delhi.

Nitesh Kumar and Rohit Kumar were handed over to the cops by IndiGo employees after Flight 6E 6383 landed at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport around 9pm. A complaint was also registered against the duo.

“We got a call from the airport and went there on Sunday night. The staff of IndiGo airline handed over two persons identified as Nitesh Kumar and Rohit Kumar to us. They were under the influence of alcohol. We tested them with a breathalyser and it indicated that they had consumed liquor. We arrested them for violating the prohibition,” station house officer (SHO) of the airport police station, Vinod Peter, told The Telegraph on Monday.

The airport SHO said an FIR had been registered and Nitesh and Rohit would be produced before a special prohibition and excise court.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar’s government imposed a total ban on liquor in April 2016 by bringing the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act.

Around 4.5 lakh people have been arrested for flouting the prohibition till now. The draconian provisions of the law were later relaxed.

First-time offenders caught drunk or drinking alcohol are now released on the payment of a fine of Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. However, they have to be produced before the special prohibition and excise judge before being released. Peter said IndiGo manager Neeraj Kumar submitted a written complaint and said the duo were drunk.

“However, the complaint does not mention any misbehaviour, ruckus or unlawful activity,” Peter added.

A tweet by IndiGo said: “We would like to clarify that there was no altercation onboard the aircraft....” The development comes in the wake of two incidents of passengers relieving themselves on board Air India international flights.

Patna airport director Anchal Prakash said: “The pilot of IndiGo flight 6E 6383 on Delhi-Patna sector intimated us about unruly passengers on board. They were identified by the airline and were brought to the arrival area under CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) escort, where IndiGo officials made a report and handed them over to the police.”
