Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he was “troubled” — no, not by the continuing violence in Manipur, the Chinese incursions into Indian territory, the loss of lives in militant attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, the long wait for the rescue of the trapped workers in the Uttarkashi tunnel or even unemployment and rising prices.

The Prime Minister said he was “troubled” by the growing trend among “big families” to hold weddings outside the country and urged them to shun it in national interest.

Modi, who is often slammed by the Opposition for his love for expensive foreign brand sunglasses and watches, also urged the people to give preference to products “made in India only” while shopping for weddings.

“These days a new milieu is being created by some families to go abroad and conduct weddings. Is this at all necessary?” Modi said in his monthly radio address Mann ki Baat.

He went on to urge these families to hold weddings on Indian soil and ensure that the country’s money remains in the country.

“If we celebrate the festivities of marriage on Indian soil, amid the people of India, the country’s money will remain in the country,” Modi added, according to the English rendering of his address in Hindi, provided by the government.

“Can you extrapolate on this mission of ‘Vocal for Local’? Why don’t we hold such weddings ceremonies in our own country?” Modi asked, hoping his “pain will reach those big families”.

Modi noted that his call of “Vocal for Local” — buying local products — had had an impact with business worth Rs 4 lakh crore registered in the country during the recent festive season.

With the wedding season commencing, Modi urged people to buy locally made products only.
