BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who made headlines on Monday for saying the GDP should not be treated as the “Bible, Ramayana or Mahabharata”, has called for a law to ban social media from reporting Parliament proceedings and said the restrictions should be extended to electronic and print media for misreporting.
Dubey complained on Tuesday that his comments on gross domestic product were twisted, particularly by social media and “breaking news”, and that he and his parents were trolled badly.
The MP from Godda in Jharkhand invoked Article 105 and 105(2) of the Constitution on parliamentary privileges and demanded a ban.
Addressing the Speaker during Zero Hour, he said: “I want to urge the government through you that for this type of incidents relating to what is spoken in the House, a law should be made to ban the social media and such activities.”
Dubey added: “I want to urge you that in case of any activity of this kind, whether it is social media, breaking news, print media or electronic media, there should be a law.”
Supporting him, BJP MP Virendra Singh said: “I am a farmer and I don’t believe in GDP. Let anybody do whatever he wants to do. I know GDP doesn’t decide the basis of farmers and villages.”
On Monday, Dubey had quoted Nobel Prize-winning economist Simon Kuznets. On Tuesday, he cited another Nobel laureate, Amartya Sen, and said a three-member committee that included Sen had taken the same stand on GDP. “Amartya Sen is known as a Congress spokesperson,” Dubey said, before adding: “He has received the Nobel Prize….”
