The Election Commission has passed interim orders to both the Shiv Sena factions, allotting the flaming torch symbol to former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and rejecting all the choices of symbol mooted by current chief minister Eknath Shinde’s group.

Shinde’s faction has been granted the name Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, which means Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. Uddhav’s group has been granted the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

The Shinde group has been asked to submit a fresh list of three proposed symbols by 10am on Tuesday.

According to reports, Uddhav on Monday petitioned Delhi High Court against the poll panel’s decision to freeze the name and symbol of the original party on October 8, arguing it was done without a hearing.

The names and symbols have been allotted in the interim, ahead of the November 3 by-election to the Andheri East Assembly seat, nominations for which close on October 14.

When Shinde rebelled in June and began calling his group Shiv Sena (Balasaheb), Uddhav had filed an advance objection with the poll panel and publicly asked Shinde not to use the name of his (Uddhav’s) father and party founder.

Both groups had demanded this name as their first choice, and were therefore denied it. Both groups got their second-preference names.
