The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the constitutional changes of August 5 will figure prominently at the three-day annual conference of directors-general and inspectors-general of police, scheduled in Pune from December 6.

Government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would inaugurate the conference, which Amit Shah will chair for the first time as Union home minister.

“The conference discusses key issues relating to internal security and lays down a road map for effective policing in the country. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir will figure prominently at the conference,” a home ministry official said.

The top brass of the Intelligence Bureau, which organises the annual event, will be present along with officials from the country’s external spy agency, RAW. National security adviser Ajit Doval is expected to make a PowerPoint presentation.

Sources said the conference’s objective is to provide an interactive platform where the state and central police bosses and security administrators can discuss national security.

Nearly 260 directors-general and inspectors-general are expected at this year’s conference, whose agenda includes the terrorism threat, security of Jammu and Kashmir, Left-wing extremism, better collection and sharing of intelligence, and modernisation of the police forces.
