Three Trinamul workers were killed and another was injured in a bomb-and-bullets clash between two alleged factions in Murshidabad’s Domkal on Saturday.

Trinamul, however, alleged that the party workers were killed by Congress and CPM activists. The Opposition denied the charge.

Police have detained three persons and a large force has been deployed at Kuchiamora village, where the clash took place.

The slain Trinamul workers — Sohel Rana, 19, Khairuddin Mondal, 55, and Rahidul Islam, 34 — were the son, elder brother and nephew, respectively, of Altab Mondal, a Trinamul panchayat samiti functionary who was killed on his way home in March. Trinamul’s factional rivalry had been blamed for that murder too.

Police and Trinamul sources said there was intense infighting between two lobbies led by Altab, who had switched over from the CPM three years ago, and Gaus Halsana over control of the area. After Altab’s death, his family members are said to be leading the faction.

Last week, seven persons arrested for Altab’s murder, including Gaus, were released on bail.

The police sources said that a group of around 15 Trinamul workers, including Altab’s relatives, planned to attack the rival group led by Gaus with crude bombs and firearms early on Saturday morning.

According to the sources, Altab’s group wanted to take revenge for his murder.

Gaus’s faction had got wind of the plan and was prepared with guns and bombs.
