At least three pilgrims were killed and five injured in a landslide at Chirbasa in Kedarnath on Sunday.
All of them were undertaking the Char Dham Yatra on foot and had resumed their journey from Gaurikund after a night break there.
The deceased have been identified as Kishore Arun Parate, 31, of Nagpur, Sunil Mahadev Kale, 24, of Jalna in Maharashtra and Anurag Singh Bist, 22, of Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand.
The injured are Chela Bhai Chaudhary, 31, Hardana Patel, 30, and Jagdish Purohit, 45, of Gujarat, Abhishek Chauhan, 18, and Dhaneshwar Dandey, 27, of Maharashtra.
Nandan Singh Rajwar, the disaster management officer of Rudraprayag district, said: “Three persons were trapped in the landslide and died. Five pilgrims who were wounded have been admitted to a local hospital.”
Last week, the Uttarakhand government had issued an advisory to the pilgrims to halt wherever they were because of a possibility of landslides on the Char Dham route through the hills.
The 16km Gaurikund-Kedarnath road is prone to landslides in monsoon. “Boulders of the size of a bus have been falling in Chirbasa for the past 24 hours. The pilgrims who have reached Gaurikund have been asked to stay there if it rains. The possibility of landslip and avalanche increases when the surface is wet,” said an officer.
