IPS officer-turned-BJP Ghatal nominee Bharati Ghosh was caught on video threatening Trinamul workers in Keshpur’s Anandapur village on Saturday and telling that they would be “beaten like dogs”.
Ghosh — in a saffron kurta — is seen in the clip moving around with some BJP workers and cops. “I will call a thousand people from Uttar Pradesh to beat you senseless. I will have you beaten like dogs,” she is heard saying in the 40-second clip captured by a resident.
Asked by The Telegraph later, Ghosh said she did threaten “some Trinamul goons”. “Trinamul is using violent tactics while the police are doing nothing. So I was compelled to warn them,” Ghosh said. The area votes on May 12.
Ghosh, an IPS officer who took voluntary retirement to join the BJP, was once the district’s police chief. She left service after falling out of favour with Mamata Banerjee, whom she used to hail in public as the “Mother of the Jungle Mahal”.
On Saturday, Trinamul — which has fielded outgoing MP and actor from Ghatal — announced a protest in front of the West Midnapore DM’s office on Sunday and said it would complain to the Election Commission.
Trinamul and BJP workers had clashed in the village on Thursday, leaving scores injured on both sides. According to sources, four BJP workers are still hospitalised.
Some locals said Ghosh’s threat on Saturday was a response to that incident. “It seems you won’t let us vote? Get out of here and go home. Lock yourselves in. I will ensure you disappear,” Ghosh is heard saying in the video.
