An unidentified terrorist was killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Tuesday.

Two security force personnel were also injured in the gunbattle which began after a cordon and search operation in Padgampora area of Pulwama, a police official said.

Giving details, the official said a cordon a search operation was launched in Padgampora following information about presence of terrorists there.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists hiding in a house opened fire. In the retaliatory action by security forces, one ultra was killed.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain ultra is being ascertained, the official said.

Kashmir Zone Police said in a Twitter post, "Encounter has started at Padgampora Awantipora in Pulwama district. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.@JmuKmrPolice"

Jammu and Kashmir posted an update of the situation on Twitter, "#AwantiporaEncounterUpdate: 01 #terrorist killed. Body of the killed terrorist yet to be retrieved. #Encounter in progress. Further details shall follow.@JmuKmrPolice"

The encounter is underway. Further information is awaited.

On Sunday, a man belonging to the Kashmiri Pandit community, bank guard Sanjay Sharma was gunned down by a terrorist in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.

On February 1, the Jammu and Kashmir Police claimed to have busted a module of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, tasked with carrying out blasts in crowded places and to target security vehicles, with the arrest of three people.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajouri, Haseeb Mughal said the module was busted after an investigation was launched following the recovery of sophisticated improvised explosive devices (IEDs), having pressure and timer mechanisms, in the district.
