A team of MPs and representatives of 26 parties which have come together to form the INDIA coalition will travel to Manipur this weekend to meet all sections of the society and take stock of the situation.

The initial plan was to send a delegation of the chief ministers of 10 states ruled by parties which are part of the INDIA coalition, but the logistics of getting all of them to be available at the same time forced a change of plans and a team of MPs and representatives of the 26 parties is being sent instead.

They are scheduled to leave Delhi on a Saturday morning flight and return by Sunday afternoon. During the visit, the delegation will visit both the hill areas and the valley to meet all sides of the fractured society. The team will also go to the relief camps.

Among those whose names have been finalised by different parties are Sushmita Dev of the Trinamul, Vandana Chavan of the NCP and Mahua Manjhi of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Prior to this, three Opposition parties — the Congress, Trinamul and the Left — sent separate delegations to Manipur.

Part of the reason for this exercise is to demonstrate that India cares and the political class has not forgotten Manipur though the mainstream narrative may not reflect the concern. The visit will also provide the MPs in the delegation to get first-hand information on the situation for their interventions in the no-confidence motion that has been moved in the Lok Sabha.

As of Thursday evening, there was no word on when the discussion will take place. The government is going about its business though some in the INDIA coalition feel that bills should not be passed when the no-confidence motion is pending; however foregone its conclusion may be.

In the Rajya Sabha, the INDIA coalition members on Thursday boycotted the weekly business advisory committee meeting called by the chairman. Last week, they had walked out of the meeting to protest the Delhi ordinance and the bill to replace it; stating that they did not want to be part of the illegality. On Thursday, they decided to stay away on the premise that it is pointless when the government is unwilling to accommodate their views.
