The income tax department had a busy day on Monday, knocking on the doors of Zee Group, Larsen & Toubro and Robert Vadra.

Vadra, the husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had visitors to record his statement in connection with some property cases.

Zee said in a statement: “Officials from the tax department have visited our offices, with certain queries. Our officials are providing all the required information and extending complete cooperation.”

L&T, the construction engineering firm, did not offer any comments.

A tax official said in New Delhi that “there are no searches or raids but we are carrying out limited verification exercise at the offices of the Larsen and Toubro and Zee Group as we had information about input tax credit… It is basically a follow-up exercise”.

Sources said the tax enquiry was linked to Zee Entertainment. Zee Group founder Subhash Chandra is a Rajya Sabha member whose media network is considered friendly towards the Narendra Modi government. However, Zee’s Punjabi news channel has taken a pro-farmer stand on the ongoing agitation.

Vadra, after his statement was recorded, told reporters: “I don’t have to hide anything.

Whatever they will ask, we will reply. We are here to cooperate. We have answered everything. It was nothing related to benami property. Justice and truth will prevail. I have nothing to hide and worry. I will always cooperate.”

The income tax team reached Vadra’s office in east Delhi’s Sukhdev Vihar on Monday afternoon, sources said. He was earlier called by the department but had sought more time, citing the coronavirus.
