Tata Steel vice-chairman Noel N. Tata on Friday said the issue of climate change can no longer be ignored and announced Tata group’s aspiration of net-zero emission by 2045.
Incidentally, the Union government had made a commitment at COP26 (in Glasgow) about going net zero by 2070.
Addressing an event organised to pay homage to Tata Steel founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, on his 184th birth anniversary in Jamshedpur, Noel said: “An area that can no longer be ignored is the issue of climate change. We have developed a project that covers the entire Tata Group-Aalingana (embrace) which aims to have net-zero emissions by 2045, pave the way for a circular economy through sharing, reusing and recycling; and preserve and restoring nature and biodiversity. Three sites in Jamshedpur city have also received Responsible Steel certification.”
Aalingana, which in Sanskrit means to embrace, embodies the Tata Group’s vision for a greener, cleaner, more sustainable, and equitable future for the planet and outlines the Tata approach to planet resilience, the group’s aspiration of net zero by 2045, and the vision of securing the future by innovating today.
The project commits to embedding sustainability into business strategy by focusing on three interconnected pillars: driving the decarbonisation of the group’s businesses and value chain; applying a systemic, circular economy approach to reduce resource use and waste; and preserving and restoring the natural environment.
The theme of this year’s founder’s day celebrations is Geennovation-Make Tomorrow Green.
In his address to the citizens of Jamshedpur at Bistupur Postal Park, Noel N Tata said: “Today we celebrate the pioneering spirit of our Founder, who spearheaded the founding of this inspiring city, as well as successive generations of leaders, each of whom played a key role in nation-building — not only in industrialisation but also in community support.”
Noel visited Tata Workers Union office, beside Steelennium Hall where the exhibition on this year’s theme, Geennovation, was organised. The Tata Steel vice-chairman also visited iROC (Integrated Remote Operations Centre) and the technical exhibition at SNTI-Tech-Ex 2023.
On March 2, 2023, several projects were inaugurated by Noel in the presence of Tata Steel CEO and MD T.V Narendran which also included a Jamshedpur Nature Trail, Covid Warrior Park, and Agni structure among others.
He also inaugurated the illumination of the Founder’s Statue in Jubilee Park as well.
