The Centre has cleared the appointment of chief justices of seven high courts but refrained from taking any decision on the elevation of Justice Akil Kureshi.
The Supreme Court collegium had initially recommended Justice Kureshi as the chief justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Centre objected to this, following which the collegium “modified” its decision and recommended him for Tripura High Court.
However, in the latest round of transfers endorsed by the Centre, it has chosen to sit over the file of Justice Kureshi without citing any reason.
In 2010, Justice Kureshi had remanded Amit Shah, now Union home minister and BJP chief, in police custody in an alleged fake encounter case.
