The Supreme court on Monday dismissed the CBI’s appeal against Bombay High Court’s order of last December that granted bail to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, who faces corruption and money-laundering charges.
A bench of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice J.B. Pardiwala, however, said the trial court would not be influenced by any observations made by the high court while granting bail to the NCP leader.
“We are not inclined to entertain the special leave petition against the grant of bail by the high court to the respondent... the observations shall not affect the merits of the trial or be pressed in any other collateral proceedings...,” the bench said in a brief order.
Deshmukh, who is facing parallel prosecution by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate for corruption and money laundering offences for the period between 2019 and 2021 on the allegations levelled against him by the former Mumbai police commissioner Par Bir Singh, was earlier granted bail by Bombay High Court in October last year.
