On Wednesday, a series of protests took place across the country led by the opposition Congress against BJP and Union home minister Amit Shah.

The Rajya Sabha was on Wednesday rocked by protests from Opposition members who demanded an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming his remarks in the House a day earlier were an "insult" to the architect of India's Constitution B R Ambedkar.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress of misleading the country by using only a part of Shah's remarks made in the Rajya Sabha and asserted that the Home Minister had in very clear words mentioned how the Congress party had insulted Ambedkar.

However, the opposition was unrelenting. Amid sloganeering, the House was adjourned for the day soon after it met post-lunch.

Several other Congress members were on their feet and started raising slogans like "'Ambedkar ka apamaan nai sahega Hindustan' (India will not tolerate Ambedkar's insult)".

Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised a poster of Ambedkar. Amid an uproar, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the proceedings within a few minutes till 2 pm.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai with several other party leaders and workers were stopped as they tried to leave the party office for their planned siege of the state assembly during the ongoing Winter Session over issues like farmer distress, unemployment, inflation, privatisation, and law and order, in Lucknow on Wednesday.

A Congress worker died during the party's protest near the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday, with its UP unit chief Ajay Rai claiming that he died due to "police brutality".

Police said 28-year-old Prabhat Pandey, a native of Gorakhpur, was brought dead to the hospital from Congress office.

"Prabhat Pandey was brought to the Civil Hospital in Hazratganj in an unconscious condition from the Congress office. The doctors declared him brought dead," DCP (Central Lucknow) Raveena Tyagi said.

A Congress worker was killed and several others were injured in tear gas shell smoke during the protest on Wednesday, the party claimed.

A senior police officer, however, said the exact reason for the death will be known after the post-mortem examination report comes, and denied that any one was injured in the incident.

Police and Congress supporters were engaged in a scuffle, in which Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora fell on the ground, and were detained. Police personnel used tear gas to disperse protestors during the Congress's 'Raj Bhavan Chalo' protest, as part of its nationwide demonstration.
