Student murdered with iron rod near college in South Delhi park

Police have arrested the 28-year-old friend who is believed to have attacked her with a rod

A woman, aged about 25, was found dead with her head battered in a park in south Delhi on Friday, police said. The incident took place at a park near Aurobindo College in Delhi's Malviya Nagar.

Police got the information at 12.08 pm that a man had hit a woman in the Vijay Mandal Park in Shivalik A Block of Malviya Nagar, and fled, reports PTI.

The woman's body was found under a bench with her head bleeding and an iron rod lying near her, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chandan Chowdhary said.

An investigation is in progress in the killing, the DCP added.

According to police, the girl, identified as Nargis, is a student of Kamala Nehru College and had come to the park with her male friend, reports ndtv.com.

According to the ndtv.com report, police have arrested the 28-year-old friend who is believed to have attacked her with a rod.

Police sources said that the accused, Irfan, wanted to get married to Nargis. But the girl's family refused, after which she stopped talking to him.

Swati Maliwal, the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, took note of the incident and tweeted, "In a posh locality like Malviya Nagar, a girl was beaten to death with a rod. Delhi is extremely unsafe. It doesn't matter to anyone. Only in newspaper reports, the names of girls are changed, and the crimes do not stop."
